입학에세이는 고등학교시절 특별한 경우를 해명할 수 있는 기회이다.

내신성적이 독특한 학생이 있었다. 흔한 학생들의 성적표를 보면 대부분 공부 잘하는 학생은 쭉 잘하고 못하는 학생들은 계속 성적이 똑같은 레벨로 유지가 되지만 이 학생은 9, 10학년 합쳐서 GPA가 ~2.3였으나 11,12학년 때 갑자기 정신을 차려 1년에 AP과목을 5-6개씩 들으며 GPA를 4.8로 올 A+/A를 받았다. 딱 11학년만 보면 어느 대학이라도 진학이 어렵지 않을 학생 이였는데 9,10학년 성적 때문에 원서에세이의 중요성이 너무나 커졌다. 어떻게든 이 믿기 힘든 일을 입학사정관들에게 해명해야 하는데 그걸 쓸 자리는 에세이밖에 없었다. 결국 에세이를 9,10학년 때 겪었던 힘든 시기에 대해서 쓴 후 본인이 원하던 대학에 진학해서 지금도 대학에서 상위권 GP를 유지하고 있다.

With a sigh, she finally broke the unbearable silence with the question, "What do you expect to do with your life?" After scrutinizing yet another of my near-failing progress reports and finding her apathetic brother playing video games, my sister reiterated this same question I was asked for the umpteenth time. Previously, I would let such "advice" from my peers slip in through one ear and out the other. But this time, the tone of her voice was different: concerned, genuine, firm. For the first time, I let the question truly sink in and struggled to find its long-sought answer. After considering this question, I realized something that truly frightened me to the core: I had no answer. If I were to continue my life of indifference and indolence, I doubtlessly had no future to look forward to. The possibility of leading an inefficient and apathetic life with no passions and long-term goals terrified me, and only then did I truly comprehend that I urgently needed to take control of my own life.
